Alberta Oil-Sands Tour Itinerary

Our tour of the Fort McMurray oil sands will depart Spring/Summer 2009.  This tour is designed to let you see what the oil sands are all about while being able to return home within the same day. (Times are approximate.)

Depart from the Calgary International airport aboard WestJet.

Arrive at the Fort McMurray airport; deplane and board the bus.

Walk across the street and join the interactive tour of the Oil Sands Discovery Centre. Experience the story of the oil sands from the driver’s seat of a 150 ton Truck and enjoy an up close look at the science and technology of the oil sands industry through interactive displays in mining, extraction, environment and more.

Depart for the Suncor Energy oil sands plant.
Note: Government issued Photo Identification is required to enter the Suncor Energy site.

Tour the Suncor oil sands facility and get a close up view of what it takes to extract oil from the tar sands. Visit Suncor Energy, the world’s first commercially successful oil sands plant. View the advanced technology and massive equipment that is used to produce this incredible resource. 100-ton scoop shovels load 380-ton payload trucks with rich, black oil sand and transport it to seven story high sizers that crush the ore into bite-sized pieces. Company trained tour guides will explain the process from mining to pipeline while traveling the designated tour route through the Steepbank, Millennium and base plant sites.
