How should I dress for my Yukon Klondike Tour?

Average temperatures during the month of August vary between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius.  We suggest that you bring clothing for Spring and Summer conditions along with light rain gear - just in case. Dawson City, Yukon mid to end summer is cooler and typical of fall like tempuratures.

What are some of the items I should pack for this trip?

To help ensure a more memorable journey, here are some suggested items to bring:

  • Valid Passport (required for travel to Alaska from Canada)
  • Camera
  • Sun glasses
  • Binoculars
  • Good walking shoes
  • Comfortable clothing for exploring and in-flight travel
  • Light jacket
  • Umbrella
  • Cash (Canadian and U.S. currency)
  • Extra batteries for your camera
  • Extra memory cards or film for your camera
  • Bug repelant
Regarding cash, there are few ATM machines outside of Whitehorse in the Yukon and we will be travelling to remote areas that may not offer credit card or Interac services. In Whitehorse, there are major banks and ATMs. Generally, remote Yukon merchants prefer cash, as do taxi drivers in Whitehorse and Dawson City. You will also need cash for in-flight bar service aboard Air North, Yukon's Airline.

During the Alaska portion of the journey, US cash may be helpful. In Skagway there is a bank and an ATM machine. Generally most merchants in Skagway will accept major credit cards. Often Canadian Interac cards do not work in the United States.

Outside of Whitehorse, you may find simple things like bug repellant, toiletries, batteries and extra memory cards or film for your camera expensive. Please remember to stock up on these items before your journey or in Whitehorse.

For our journey to Dawson City aboard Air North from Whitehorse, it may be helpful to pack lightly by leaving excess items with the Bell desk at the Westmark Whitehorse where we will be returning to in just over 24 hours after our departure. In Dawson City, there are no elevators or baggage belts at the airport, therefore, packing light will make your trip to Dawson City more enjoyable.

In Dawson City, the streets are dirt which creates a lot of dust if it's hot and mud if it rains. Therefore, please pack accordingly.

You wil likely need bug repelant in Dawson City, plus our day trip to Kluane National Park and the Long Ago People's Place.
